Don't be accessible. Be present

People often talk about having an open door policy, about being accessible. But are they really?

Ever notice that often, while you are meeting with someone, they aren't really there? They are looking at their watch, checking their blackberry or looking at a computer screen; they are thinking about the call they just had or the meeting to come. They are doing a lot of things, but they aren't present for you!

When you meet with your people, work on having a "be present" philosophy. Being accessible isn't about being physically available to people; its about being totally there for them. When you give people your time, give it to them ... totally. Be completely present and available to them. Look at them. Listen. Engage.

They will notice.

And so will you.
