Don't put the problem in its neat, little box

We like to solve things and in order to solve things we have to be able to define the problem.

Often, in our haste to solve, we will categorize problems or issues into neat little boxes that we can address and put away. After all, small, simple problems means small, simple solutions, right?

Take the time to assess and understand a problem before diving into the fix. Every issue involves people, and people are not simple and cannot be categorized; when peopel are in the equation, outcomes can vary; so chances are the problem is unique and not quite as simple as you think.

Think it through. Don't assume you have solved many problems like this before. Take that little bit of time to think through possible outcomes and ramifications and use your experience to solve! Taking the time will make the difference between keeping it a small problem (and a small solve) or seeing the problem escalate in size, complexity and ramifications.
