I'm not that kind of engineer

I have a group of friends and we go on roadtrips together, and vacation together. One of those friends is Lou. Lou is an engineer Often times we'd get into a situation where we needed something fixed or rigged - plumbing, strapping something on the roof of the car, setting up a campsite. Inevitably, when Lou would offer to help, someone in our group would joke "He's not that kind of engineer."

I've found that often experience is not the critical success factor. I'm a big fan of passion, energy, proactiveness. The willingness and desire to take ownership of an issue, to find a solution and pursue the fix stands for a lot.

Experience and skills can be learned as long as someone wants to learn. We have all met people who have tons of experience but can't, or won't, use it to drive change and improvement.

Energy and passion abide in people who want to excel, who want to improve, who want to solve, who want to be changemakers. When these people add experience and skills to the mix, that's a combination I will bet on any day.

Lou is always there to help solve the problem. Turns out he is THAT kind of engineer.
