It is all on you

As leaders we need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of our team. We need to understand each others' styles. And most importantly ,we need to know how to marshall that team to become a high-performing team that leverages its strengths and diversity to engage as a team!. A high-performing team is an engaged team.

Nowhere does the true nature of your team manifest itself more than the meeting room.

When you run your meetings, you have the accountability to lead an effective meeting. And while you are doing that, you need to observe the dynamics and assure that things continue to flow so that your meeting objectives are met. Look out for the following as measures of engagement:

Did your team come prepared for the agenda items? Did they read the minutes and reading material.

When a team member is presenting, are people listening and engaging, or do they shut down until their agenda item comes up?

Does the team value and honor the time allotted for agenda items?

Do team members support each other or do team members feel ok to beat each other up?

Is everyone contributing or are few usurping the conversations?

Is the team engaging in real dialogue and does the discussion end with action items?

And while you observe, remember that as the leader, you own all of the above.
Do you prepare for the meeting?
How effectively did you structure the agenda?
Do you insist on good minutes and action items?
What team behaviors and norms do you foster?
How well do you manage and navigate the conversation?
Do you assure that all participate and are heard?
Do you set a tight agenda and adhere to it?

Its all on you. The team will follow your lead.
