Balancing the Interview

I am a big fan of behavioral interviewing ("Tell me about a time when you...").  This interviewing style allows the interviewer to take actual experiences and behaviors of the candidate and assess how those fit into the culture and requirements of their company. It takes away much of the salesmanship of candidates and focuses on actual experiences.

Having said that, it is only one aspect of the interviewing process.  As leaders, we are looking for skills, experience and style.

Skills - Does the candidate have the skills to do the job?

Experience - What kind of experience am I looking for in the candidate?

Style - Will the candidate fit in? Am I relating to the candidate? What kind of team-member am I looking for to strengthen my team's style and dynamics?

In your interviewing process, no matter what process you use, make sure you are testing against all three elements - Skill, Experience, style.

And by the way ... the same goes when you are interviewing. Stay balanced. Remind yourself during the interview that the real you has to come out during the interview. Make sure your style is visible in your interview answers. bring all of you to the table
