Too accessible?

Being accessible to our people is important, but there is such a thing as being too accessible.

On the one hand, being available to mentor and guide your employees is necessary for their development; necessary so that the perspective of your experience becomes a component of important decisions.  As a leader, you are developing your people.  Part of that development is to assure that they can autonomously make the tough calls, that they can think through scenarios and make the best call at the time.

However, do it too much, and you hamper that very development.

Don't cross the line into micro-management, into signaling that you don't trust your people to make decisions, to take risks and to make mistakes.

Manage your employee engagement with an eye to balancing  your necessary leadership guidance and giving them the room to develop.
