Be Prepared

I saw an interview with Tim Cook, CEO of Apple. He talked about an assignment he had in business school to write down his plan for the next 25 years. In preparation for the interview, he looked at his plan:
"Looking back the plan was reasonably accurate for the first 18-24 months after it was written but not at all after that. Not a single thing. Zero. "

I'm not at all surprised by that.

The bottom line is we can plan all we want, but we often don't have control over circumstances that come our way. And we see opportunities, and learn new things, new passions that lead us in new directions.

It's great to have a plan. Be it a life plan, a business plan or a project plan. And as we pursue it we need to be guided by our non-negotiables, our values; and we need to be open to unexpected opportunities, flexible to embrace change, to react and respond.

Tim Cook goes on to say that his journey was not predictable at all and that we must learn how to be prepared.

Be prepared.  Prepared for change, prepare to be baffled, to be surprised, disappointed, delighted. Be prepared for roadblocks and opportunities. Take advantage!

Face your life with boldness and with empathy. Know your direction, but be flexible to embrace what comes your way.

Be prepared.
