Choose how you want to lead

A few months ago, I had a great lunch with my friend Tom Snowberger, a true leader and HR professional.  We were discussing the importance of self-awareness in leadership and how leaders have to know that their obligations as leaders have many dimensions - financial, social, people development. We talked about what it means to create impact.

Some leaders are stewards of the position, taking what they inherited and maintaining it. Others, bring their stamp to the position, set the course and motivate the organization to advance.

In his usual succinct way, Tom looked at me and said "leaders have to have an awareness of what they can and want  to contribute to the organization; they have to choose how they want to lead; do they want to be representatives of the company or do they want to truly lead it?"
